What is sustainability?

The ability to provide for the needs of the world’s current population without hindering the ability of future generations to provide for themselves. Not having a sustainability policy is not an option any more. It is critical to have a written policy that is honest, transparent, authentic and supported with metrics that benchmark where you are now, and how you will strive to improve in the future. It is the “triple bottom line” and all three of these need to be addressed:

People – human capital
Embodies human and social sustainability
Fair and beneficial business practices toward individuals and their communities
Reciprocal social structure in which the well-being of stakeholder interests are interdependent

Planet – natural capital
Embodies environmental sustainability
Responsible ecological practices and avoidance of anything destructive
Careful management of consumption and waste to reduce a company’s carbon footprint
Prosperity – financial capital
Embodies economic sustainability
Economic benefits enjoyed by the host community
The lasting impact an organization has on an economic environment – not to be confused with internal profit
